MELA Sciences acquires PhotoMedex's dermatology laser and light businesses

MELA Sciences has acquired the dermatology laser and light businesses from PhotoMedex for $42.5 million in cash.

MELA Sciences (Irvington, NY) has acquired the XTRAC and VTRAC dermatology laser and light businesses from PhotoMedex (Horsham, PA) for $42.5 million in cash. The two businesses generated $30.6 million in revenues in 2014.

XTRAC is an ultraviolet (UV) light excimer laser system that treats psoriasis, vitiligo, and other skin diseases, while the VTRAC excimer lamp system provides targeted therapeutic efficacy demonstrated by excimer technology.

As of March 31, 2015, there were 640 installed XTRAC systems in the U.S., up from 527 at the end of March 2014. In 2014, over 300,000 XTRAC laser treatments were performed on approximately 19,000 patients in the U.S.
