The Axio Scan.Z1 automated microscope from Carl Zeiss Microscopy (Thornwood, NY) digitizes fixed tissue sections and cytologic specimens in bright-field and fluorescence, with the ability to digitize 100 microscope slides at once. A self-calibrating automated slide scanner presents specimens on virtual slides within minutes, while a Colibri.2 ultraviolet (UV)-free LED light source protects specimens under observation. For fluorescence applications, filter wheels switch wavelengths in 50 ms. Uses include tissue analysis in Alzheimer's and cancer research, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.
