Sapphire lenses for medical uses by Meller Optics

Custom sapphire lenses from Meller Optics (Providence, RI) have uses in medical sensors and instrumentation, as they are impervious to blood, harsh chemicals, and chlorine and fluorine gas. They feature Moh 9 hardness for withstanding frequent use and sterilization procedures, and are available in round or square, concave or convex, and flat or stepped versions. They can also incorporate holes, edge treatments, metallization, and coatings to enhance transmission to >99%, depending upon thickness. The lenses are manufactured to OEM specifications in 0.250–10 in. diameter sizes, and transmit from the UV to 4.7 µm. Flatness can be held to 1/10th wave, with parallelism to 2 arcsec and surface finishes to <0.5 mm.
