St. Louis University's Hruza named as new ASLMS president

George J. Hruza, MD, MBA, clinical professor of dermatology and otolaryngology at St. Louis University and director of the Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center (both in St. Louis, MO), has been named the new president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS). The appointment was made on April 21 at the organization's Annual Conference.

Hruza has been a member of ASLMS for 25 years and previously served as president-elect, vice president, and treasurer on the ASLMS Board of Directors. ASLMS vice president Jeffrey Dover, MD, a director of SkinCare Physicians (Chestnut Hill, MA), was named president-elect, and Juanita Anders, Ph.D., professor of anatomy, physiology, and genetics at The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (Bethesda, MD), was elected vice president. Other new officers include Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, co-director of laser surgery at the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery (Washington, DC), who was elected secretary, and Stuart Nelson, MD, medical director at the Beckman Laser Institute (Irvine, CA), who will become the organization's historian. Continuing as treasurer for ASLMS is Mathew Avram, MD, JD director of the MGH Dermatology Laser & Cosmetic Center (Boston, MA).

Hruza states that the organization needs to continue its support of sensible laser regulations and as a resource for the FDA as they decide about what energy-based devices to approve, having already funded $1,350,000 in original laser research. To set their sights higher, however, a self-sustaining endowment fund for the organization is planned, he says.

Hruza earned his medical degree from New York University (NYU) and completed his dermatology residency at NYU Medical Center in 1986, followed by a laser surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School (Cambridge, MA) and a Mohs and dermatologic surgery fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hruza is a certified diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology. He serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and has contributed more than 135 publications, including a textbook on laser surgery. Also, he has lectured extensively on four continents on lasers in dermatology, Mohs surgery, skin cancer, cosmetic surgery, and dermatologic surgery.
