Boulder, CO-- Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and JILA have demonstrated the use of infrared (IR) laser light to quickly and precisely heat the water in tiny sample containers known as "nano bathtubs" for microscopy studies of the biochemistry of single molecules and nanoparticles. -
07/26/2010 -- Fluorescence technique findings tie genetically abnormal cells in blood to lung cancer
Houston-- A research team led by scientists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center used a novel approach to detect genetically abnormal cells in the blood of non-small cell lung cancer patients that match abnormalities found in tumor cells and increase in number with the severity of the disease. -

Libing Liu, Shu Wang and colleagues at Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Science have investigated cellular uptake of a cationic polythiophene polymer (PMNT) in cancer cells and shown that it has potential for simultaneous therapeutic and imaging applications. -

Russian physicists at the Institute for Laser Problems and Information Technology have developed medical equipment that will help to get rid of the deflection of the nasal septum and correct the form of the eye cornea to treat near- or far-sightedness, which, until recently, could be corrected only surgically. -
07/30/2010 -- Fellowship award backs research on chemical composition of nanoscale regions in living cells
Cardiff, Wales-- Physicist Dr. Paola Borri of the Cardiff School of Biosciences at Cardiff University has won a £1.1M Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Leadership Award for the next five years, which she will use to develop a new "optical nanoscopy" technology to determine the intrinsic chemical composition of nanoscale regions in living cells.
